Iconic Hybrid Off-Road Adventure Since 2006

Twenty years ago, in 2006, Kimberley Kampers introduced something truly groundbreaking to the Australian off-road scene: the Kimberley Karavan, Australia’s first genuine expanding hybrid caravan.

The original prototype Kimberley Karavan, the iconic shape is born. (March 2006).

Born from the same pioneering spirit that launched Kimberley Kampers in 1994 — building tough, comfortable rigs ready for the remote challenges of the Kimberley region — the Karavan combined the compact agility of a camper trailer with the hard-walled comforts of a caravan.

Prototype adventure testing. (March 2006).

It let adventurers tow easily into remote spots and then unfold into a spacious, luxurious basecamp.

The Enduring Core DNA
What has made the Karavan an icon for two decades is its unwavering core DNA:

  • Rugged off-road capability paired with home-like comfort
  • Compact, low-profile travel mode that expands into generous living space at camp
  • Innovative engineering that prioritizes strength, lightness, and real-world durability
  • A perfect balance of adventure-ready toughness and refined luxury

This DNA has guided every evolution, ensuring the Karavan remains true to its roots while embracing smarter, better ways to build.

One of the very first upgrades – replacing the hand-wound winch with the POWERglide electric winch system! (2006)

Key Improvements Since 2006
The Karavan has evolved significantly while staying faithful to its original vision.

Highlights include:

  • Lightweight composite panels — vacuum-infused closed-cell walls replacing earlier constructions for better insulation, strength, and weight savings
  • Advanced power systems — from early LED lighting innovations to modern lithium batteries, high-efficiency solar, and sophisticated 48V setups
  • Suspension and chassis upgrades — enhanced hot-dipped galvanized chassis, air suspension options, and precision engineering for smoother rides and greater carrying capacity
  • Interior and living refinements — improved kitchens (indoor/outdoor), ensuite options (including swing-away toilet), better insulation, sustainable materials like bamboo drawer fronts, and premium finishes
  • Actuator lifting systems and other user-friendly mechanisms for easier setup
  • Overall weight reductions and efficiency gains while increasing durability and off-grid capability

Vacuum-infused composite walls/floors, bamboo drawer fronts and Corian benchtops have all reduced weight. The drawer fronts and benchtops add a contemporary style.

The Linear actuator lifting system is a big step forward from the electric winch system.

Many choices of mattresses – dual layer foam, innerspring and air-adjustable – have been introduced to help you get the best night’s sleep. Seating comfort and appearance is now first-class luxury.

The Karavan interior has evolved into a luxurious home away from home with gradual tweaks improving fit, finish and the overall feel of materials involved.

Strengthened independent swing arm suspension and enlarged stub axles. Air bags replaced coil springs. Shock absorbers now have finer setting controls and even better heat dissipation with the remote reservoirs.

Laser-cut and hot-dipped galvanised chassis . Chassis-swing arm linked. Composite floor made from recycled PET bottles.

Swing-away toilet allows for a more comfortable showering experience. Dual-purpose kitchen sink becomes ensuite sink, extended ensuite curtain provides far more space.

Sink and cooktop positions switched for larger ensuite – 2022.

Superthin polymer-backed solar arrays reduce weight and complexity.

48V power system with remote use and monitoring from smart phone.  Large touch screen display is easy to navigate.

48V power system has reduced weight, is easier to control and simplified wiring.

Entertainment and communications technology options have constantly evolved – easy integration of major systems like Starlink is possible.

The large outside kitchen has been a game-changer  – large sink / prep area and choice of cookers make cooking outside a breeze.

The Night Storm Colour Option – a modern look with iconic style.

Night Storm Colour Option – lower body matched to top body for cohesive look.

The iconic Karavan profile – standing the test of time. (2020)

The Iconic Shape That Endures
One glance and you know it’s a Kimberley Karavan. Its distinctive, low-slung, aerodynamic profile when closed for travel — expanding via the innovative sliding canopy into a tall, spacious hard-shell haven — has remained instantly recognizable.

Few designs in the industry are as boldly unique or confidently unchanged. This shape isn’t just iconic; it’s proven, practical, and beloved by owners who appreciate both its functionality and its standout presence on any outback track.
